Hasad: Jealousy/Envy/Malice:

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

لاَ تَحَاسَدُوا

…

“Don’t nurse Hasad (malice/jealousy/envy) against one another” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree & Saheeh Muslim]

Shaikh al-Fawzaan حفظه الله said: “The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “لاَ تَحَاسَدُوا” because Hasad is a major factor which causes differences among the Muslims and it is what damages the societies the most.

Hasad means: feeling the need to see the blessings of others diminishes; irrespective of if the wisher wants to have that blessing for himself or that the blessing diminishes and no one gets it.

In another Hadeeth the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْحَسَدَ فَإِنَّ الْحَسَدَ يَأْكُلُ الْحَسَنَاتِ كَمَا تَأْكُلُ النَّارُ الْحَطَبَ أَوْ قَالَ الْعُشْبَ

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Avoid envy, for envy devours good deeds just as fire devours wood” or he said: “grass.” [Sunan Abu Dawood (4903) and graded as “Dha`eef” (Weak) by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

1. Hasad is what had driven Shaitaan towards Kufr when he got jealous of Aadam عليه السلام.
2. Hasad is what had driven the Jews towards Kufr even though they realized the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم is indeed the Messenger of Allaah.
3. Hasad is what had made one of the sons of Aadam kill the other.

[Summarized from Shaikh al-Fawzaan’s explanation of 40 Hadeeth al-Nawawee]
